Dolly Varden will return to Evanston’s premiere music venue on December 22nd! with special guests Rachel Drew and the Bitter Roots.
As part of Steve Dawson’s September residency at the Hideout, Dolly Varden will play “The Panic Bell,” their acclaimed 2007 album, in its entirety, along with new songs they’ve been working on for their next album.
“Songwriter Steve Dawson has an unerring capacity for finding the caveat in joy and desolation, in light and darkness. His voice thins and strains with compelling force; partner Diane Christiansen’s is here a fragile ache, there a soothing croon of reassurance; and when they sing together, the two create an entirely new whole. The band moves seamlessly from the delicate, folky sound of “Small Pockets” and the Stones-tinged rock of “You Never Will” to the guitar-and-harp wail of “Triumph Mine, Idaho” and the gorgeous pop of “It’s All Gonna Change,” all the while managing to inhabit the music with a simmering, barely contained intensity. The Panic Bell serves notice that Dolly Varden continues to make pop music that is seductive, transcendent and peerless”

“I am very excited to announce the release of “Take It To The Bridge: Unlocking The Great Songs Inside You.” I’ve been working on it with Mark Caro for many years as an extension of my songwriting classes at The Old Town School of Folk Music. The book aims to encourage and inspire anyone who’s ever thought about writing a song through practical, approachable assignments that explore all elements of songwriting: form, lyrics, chords, melody and rhythm. The exercises were culled from 10 years of weekly assignments. Mark and I chose the ones that have had the best results over the years and seem to help people open up and write to their best potential. The book can be ordered direct from GIA, the publisher, now at this link.”
We have 2 big events coming up to celebrate the book release where you can buy the book from us in person and get a sheet of stickers for self-application as you complete the assignments!

Thanks for helping us celebrate our 20th anniversary year. The big Old Town School of Folk Music show was ridiculously fun and filled with love and joy because you all showed up and helped us reminisce and sing and laugh along. And the recent show at SPACE, where we played “The Dumbest Magnets” start to finish, was really one we’ll remember forever. Thank you all so much for your continued support for our music. We’re not sure what the next thing will be – there will be more shows, recordings, maybe even tours – we will let you know as soon as we know!
